KCTL intends to renovate Classon Playgrounds this summer to create a unique tennis and sports facility for our students and the surrounding community. The renovation will include resurfacing portions of the playground to create five tennis courts (one full-sized, two 60' and two 36'), a running track, hopscotch and foursquare areas, and repainted lines on two existing basketball courts.
WHAT THIS WILL MEAN TO OUR STUDENTS AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
Once this renovation is complete, all five of our current sites will have physical tennis courts for our students to learn and develop their skills on (four of these five sites will have been renovated by KCTL). Having one full-sized and four youth-sized courts at the same location will allow our students to develop their skills from when they join us (5) to when they graduate (15). In the past, our Lafayette Gardens students have quickly outgrown the space, and without assistance to practice at other KCTL sites, would not be afforded the opportunity to improve, commit and benefit from all aspects of our tennis and life-skills programming.
The renovation will also allow KCTL to partner with PS 270 and create an after-school tennis and life-skills curriculum which will be offered to over 100 students attending the school. Partnering with PS 270 will open a unique opportunity for KCTL to use classroom space as we look to build upon our education program.
This renovation benefits far more than just our students. By adding a running track, repainting lines on two basketball courts, and adding in foursquare and hopscotch areas, the renovations will benefit an immeasurable number of children and families living in the local community. Our goal is to create a space that will be utilized for healthy activities when our programming is not running, so that the community can benefit collectively.
For KCTL to complete this renovation, increase programming at LG, and create an after-school program at PS 270, we need to raise $25,000. Funds over $25,000 will go towards building capacity within KCTL in 2018 as we look to offer more age-, ability-, and gender-specific programming and hire our first Development Associate. This new hire will be responsible for writing grants and managing our sustainability plan.
